 WI advise that the closure from Lullymore to Hartley Bridge is being extended until Easter. They hope to have the navigation re-opened before Friday 6th April (Good Friday). The canal was closed and drained last autumn to allow an invasive weed species to be dealt with. An attempt was made during winter 2010 to deal with it by means of covering the weed with jute matting but it was found by the end of last summer, that the matting was degrading too rapidly in the shallows at the banksides. It seems that inspection after draining revealed the problem to be more widespread than previously thought.
They also advise that the Ardclough closure is on schedule and should be finished before Paddy's weekend.
