What an absolutely wonderful opportunity to introduce two to three hundred people from Ireland and abroad to the River Barrow as we celebrate 220 years of the Navigation.
The Barrow glistened, blue flags flew and flora and fauna looked their absolute best on this unique occasion. There was nothing but compliments from the drivers and their passengers in the fabulous cars that stopped near the Heritage Boats to partake of the elderflower, ginger and lemon cordials on offer. Around eighty of the cars took to the route along the towpath between Tinahinch and St Mullins on a dry Saturday afternoon.
Waterways Ireland did us proud; WI staff were on hand all along the route and the towpath had been repaired and resurfaced in places to create a flat surface for these lovely slow moving automobiles; appreciated by all those who used it on the day and by the walkers who used it after the event. One of the drivers stated “I just did not expect anything like this in Ireland, have lived here all my life and never knew it existed before!”.
Thank you to all involved, Waterways Ireland, Carlow Tourism, the IVVCC organisers and of course, the delightful car owners for giving us a great day on the banks of the Barrow.
